Since completing 1982’s ‘Lucinda’, A Certain Ratio fulfilled their contract with ForeFront Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Thom Yorke has compared writing for A Certain Ratio’s new album to that on ‘Sextet’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. Lead single “Lucinda” and “Crystal” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. If I may, I suggest “Lucinda”. That one song is amazing!
Crystal - I like this one. Gum - To me, this is the best song on the Sextet. Knife Slits Water is a excellent song and it grows on you. The opening track Skipscada is very much like you would expect from other albums. Day One - another great track from the Sextet album. Rub Down is so unique, as each one of the songs is. Rialto is simple, dignified and effective, A Certain Ratio refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. A Certain Ratio is one of artists that allow his songs like Below The Canal to stand on their own and be heard.
