I am not a real Jazz music type of person, but i have to admit ‘A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness’ really is amazing. Since completing 1966’s ‘A Certain Smile’, Astrud Gilberto fulfilled their contract with ForeFront Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This album has some very good songs like A Certain Smile and A Certain Sadness. A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness is the best essence of Astrud Gilberto.
Astrud Gilberto breathes new life into the music in A Certain Sadness. Nega Do Cabelo Duro - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. So Nice (Summer Samba) make listening to Astrud Gilberto like being in some sort of time warp. There is astounding mix of music in Voce Ja Foi Bahia. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of Astrud Gilberto. I find myself hearing bits of Googbye Sadness (Tristeza) here and there throughout my waking hours. The opening track Call Me is very much like you would expect from other albums. Here’s That Rainy Day is probably the most interesting track on A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. Tu Mi Delirio - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. It’s A Lovely Day Today on A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness is solid and easy to listen to. The Sadness Of After which is my favorite is a truly Astrud Gilberto sounding song. Who Needs Forewer great lyrics, dark, deep, angry and cool.
