King of Tenors carries a very emotional theme throughout the album. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Ben Webster on ‘Bounce Blues (Alternate Take)’. Lead single “Bounce Blues (Alternate Take)” and “Bounce Blues” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. If I may, I suggest “Bounce Blues (Alternate Take)”. That one song is amazing!
Bounce Blues hits the heart. Ben Webster breathes new life into the music in Cotton Tail. Vocals of Ben Webster in Danny Boy really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore is amazing work of Ben Webster. The first time I listened to Jive at Six I was struck by its gorgeous sound. Although Pennies from Heaven is very melodic it is far from sad. Poutin’ has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. Tenderly is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. That’s All (Single Version) is the perfect blend of moody yet optimistic tunes. That’s All is probably the most interesting track on King of Tenors.
