This is the first studio album from Big Joe Williams since bad diagnosis in 1964. At Folk City isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Lead single “She’s Doggin’ Me” and “Trouble Gonna Take Me To My Grave” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. She’s Doggin’ Me and Trouble Gonna Take Me To My Grave is really good.
Trouble Gonna Take Me To My Grave is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. Big Joe Williams sings his heart out in Mink Coat Blues. Just Want To Be Your Man is a very catchy tune. I find myself hearing bits of I’m Tired, Woman here and there throughout my waking hours. I’m Gonna Do It This Time is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Big Joe Williams released so far. I Can’t Sign My Name is a great opener for At Folk City. How Do You Want Your Rollin’ Done without a doubt is the standout song of At Folk City. Bugle Blues is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. Burned Child Is Scared Of Fire is really a nice song to relax and listen too. Bottle Up and Go - Okay, I just talked about depth. Baby, I Ain’t Gonna Let You Go - This is a very lively song.
