This is the first studio album from Big Joe Williams since bad diagnosis in 1971. On Going Back To Crawford album, Big Joe Williams have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. I am not a real Blues music type of person, but i have to admit ‘Going Back To Crawford’ really is amazing. Smart music for smart people.
Back Home Blues - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody. Bad Luck - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Big Joe Williams. Been In Crawford Too Long is Big Joe Williams’s best work in years. So much energy, so exciting a sound.Put Can’t Listen No More into car stereo for your highway driving Checkin’ Out is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. Corrina (1:49) a good melody. Don’t Stay Long is another favourite of mine. Good Times Here, Better Down The Road is a perfect song and it grows on you. I loved I Don’t Know Why the first time I heard it. I Walked All Night Long is a bit different from Big Joe Williams stereotypical stuff. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. I’m Wild About My Jelly Roll is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. I like the idea behind Moamin’ ‘Fo Day. I find myself hearing bits of My Baby Don’t Stand No Foolin’ here and there throughout my waking hours. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Going Back To Crawford is My Baby Stopped Drinking Water. The opening track My Last Girl-Don’t Treat Her Wrong is very much like you would expect from other albums. Run Here Jailer With The Key is possibly the best song Big Joe Williams has come up. Saturday Night Women gives taste of what makes Big Joe Williams special as a musician. Shake It Enough For Me - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. Still going through Going Back To Crawford and coming to appreciate She Have Broken My Heart more and more with every listen. I hope to keep hearing Big Joe Williams works for a long time to come. Lyrics of Sugar On The Bottom are precise and evocative. Take Me Out Of The Bottom is one of my favorite songs by Big Joe Williams.
