Blues - Various Artists’s debut, ‘Hound Dog Taylor - Chess Blues (1960-1967) - CD4′, does not fit easily into one genre. There is no doubt that Blues - Various Artists has talent. After seeing Calling On My Darling (Albert King), I had to have a good Blues - Various Artists cd. If you want to hear real Blues, get this record now!
First Time I Met The Blues (Buddy Guy) is just simply stunning. Keep It To Myself (Buddy Guy) is almost impossible to review. Listening to Too Poor (Detroit Jr.) you can hear that Blues - Various Artists has still amazing chemistry with band members. Jinglin’ Baby (Eddie Burns) is one of the more up-tempo songs on Hound Dog Taylor - Chess Blues (1960-1967) - CD4. I like The Sun Is Shining (alternate; Elmore James) because it’s extremely catchy and has awesome drumming. I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. Something’s Got A Hold On Me (Etta James) is a strong cut, one of many. Sitting Here Alone (Hound Dog Taylor) is one of the coolest songs Blues - Various Artists has ever recorded. Goin’ Down Slow (Howlin’ Wolf) - A nice song. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. The Red Rooster (Howlin’ Wolf) is a marvelous song and it grows on you. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (John Lee Hooker) is a great opener for Hound Dog Taylor - Chess Blues (1960-1967) - CD4. Wang Dang Doodle (Koko Taylor) is a cool, simple song by Blues - Various Artists at the top of his game. What Kind Of Man Is That- (Koko Taylor) - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. This track is nearly perfect if not perfect. This track is just fantastic from start to finish. We’re Gonna Make It (Little Milton) I just LOVE this mix! The Shakedown (Lloyd Glenn) is one of the best records ever. Blue Shadows (Lowell Fulson) is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Hound Dog Taylor - Chess Blues (1960-1967) - CD4. After you’ve listened to Bring It On Home (Sonny Boy Williamson), most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Nice and different song. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Wrinkles (The Big Three Trio). I now have Good Moanin’ Blues (Walter Horton) as one of my personal favorites.
