This disc has all of the essential Cal Tjader classics. When you buy a Cal Tjader album, you know exactly what you’re getting! Lead single “The Whiffenpoof Song” and “Soul Bird (Tin Tin Deo)” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Cool, but I like their other actual stuff better like Soul Bird: Whiffenpoof.
Vocal harmonies in this track are great and song structure is just right. This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely. That’s All is a medium tempo tune. Soul Motion is maybe the best thing the group’s ever done. Blew our minds when we first heard Reza. Cal Tjader offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. Sonny Boy is a fine track on any terms. Doxy gives good insight into the truths. Samba De Orfeu is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Strong, powerful vocals of Cal Tjader in Shiny Silk Stockings are very impressive. Daddy Wong Legs make listening to Cal Tjader like being in some sort of time warp.
