After seeing Myself When I Am Real, I had to have a good Charles Mingus cd. There were many famous songs of Charles Mingus available. Charles Mingus’s debut, ‘Mingus Plays Piano’, does not fit easily into one genre. Myself When I Am Real and I Can’t Get Started is really good.
The sound in I Can’t Get Started is really warm and Charles Mingus’s signature voice is still very much present. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. It took me a little time but I ended up loving Roland Kirk’s Message. Memories Of You is the albums biggest surprise. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Orange Was The Colour Of Her Dress Then Silk Blue is nothing but pure genius. Meditations For Moses is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Overall a nice softer song. I’m Gettin’ Sentimental Over You is perfect. Charles Mingus rocks harder than ever with Compositional Theme Story.
