There is so much to love about Dexter Gordon, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by Dexter Gordon. Self-described as Jazz with lots of words, Dexter Gordon comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Overall, I would highly recommend Takin’ Off (with Herbie Hancock) CD.
Herbie Hancock Alone and I is simple, dignified and effective, Dexter Gordon refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Takin’ Off (with Herbie Hancock). Empty Pockets - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. The Maze is the more seemingly obscure song on Takin’ Off (with Herbie Hancock) that bear up best to repeated listening. Three Bags Full is just simply stunning.
