After debuting at No. 1 last week, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane’s album Impulse! falls to No. 2 with 425,000, a sales slide of 89%. This is the first studio album from Duke Ellington and John Coltrane since bad diagnosis in 1962. Lead single “In A Sentimental Mood” and “Take The Coltrane” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Impulse! is not something you should pass up.
Take The Coltrane is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. This is probably my favorite song on the album. It’s very catchy and easy to get into which is what you want in a song. My Little Brown Book has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Duke Ellington and John Coltrane is hitting on all cylinders in Angelica.
