‘Soul Call’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. There is no doubt that Duke Ellington has talent. Duke Ellington’s debut, ‘Soul Call’, does not fit easily into one genre. Unappreciated gift to Jazz
It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: West Indian Pancake, which shows, blatantly, how much Duke Ellington has evolved as a singer. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. Skin Deep is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Soul Call is Sophisticated Lady. Wings and Things is one of the more up-tempo songs on Soul Call. The Opener is exquisite work of Duke Ellington. Caravan actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Duke Ellington’s face. Kinda Dukish and Rockin’ In Rh as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. Such Sweet Thunder - I just love it. Madness In Great Ones is a gorgeous, simple song by Duke Ellington at the top of his game. The sound of Main Stem is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created. Take The “A” Train has a beautifully haunting disco flavor.
