Now signed to Ella Fitzgerald’s EMI Records, the title track from second album “The Birthday Concert In Rome” leads Ella Fitzgerald’s back-to-school campaign. Lead single “Introduction [In Italian]” and “St. Louis Blues” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. The Birthday Concert In Rome isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. One of Ella Fitzgerald’s best albums yet.
St. Louis Blues - A nice song. These Foolish Things good vocals. Just Squeeze Me (But Don’t Tea sets the tone for the entire album. Angel Eyes is astounding. That Old Black Magic is a fine track on any terms. Just One Of Those Things has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Still going through The Birthday Concert In Rome and coming to appreciate I Love You Porgy more and more with every listen. It’All Right With Me is a good listen every once in a while. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. Introduction (2) as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. When You’re Smiling - This one makes me want to not only sing along. A Foggy Day - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Music in Midnight Sun is marvelous as in all tracks of The Birthday Concert In Rome. The Lady Is A Tramp (2:38) - awsome. Sophisticated Lady is a gorgeous, simple song by Ella Fitzgerald at the top of his game. Caravan as a highlight of The Birthday Concert In Rome contains a ton of amazing melodies. Stompin’At The Savoy is a medium tempo tune.
