Lead single “Blues In the Night” and “Let’s Fall In Love” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Since Ella Fitzgerald last CD (The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One)) on Columbia Records back in 1961, I have felt a massive void in my life. Thom Yorke has compared writing for Ella Fitzgerald’s new album to that on ‘The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One)’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. I wish that “The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One)” album was instrumental.
Don’t judge Let’s Fall In Love on the first listening. Ella Fitzgerald has astounded me with this amazing track. Sing My Heart - This one makes me want to not only sing along. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. My Shining Hour as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. Blew our minds when we first heard Hooray for Love. This Time the Dream’s On Me as a highlight of The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One) contains a ton of amazing melodies. If you are a Ella Fitzgerald fan, you will love That Old Black Magic. I’ve Got the World on a String is one of these floating songs. Let’s Take a Walk Around the Block have really caught my ear and imagination. Ill Wind is a very catchy tune. Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Ella Fitzgerald released so far.
