It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of J. J. Cale energies, virtually a rebirth. While no new J. J. Cale album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1974 tour in North America. Lead single “Crying” and “I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me) is beautiful, yet underrated track. Starbound hits the heart. Rock and Roll Records gives taste of what makes J. J. Cale special as a musician. Okie couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track The Old Man and Me. Everlovin’ Woman is nothing but pure genius. Cajun Moon without a doubt is the standout song of Okie. You have to get essence of the I’d Like To Love You Baby’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Anyway The Wind Blows is almost impossible to review. The sound in Precious Memories is really warm and J. J. Cale’s signature voice is still very much present. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. I Got The Same Old Blues is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track J. J. Cale ever produced.
