Since completing 1974’s ‘Trouble In Mind’, Janis Joplin fulfilled their contract with EMI Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Now signed to Janis Joplin’s EMI Records, the title track from second album “Early Performances” leads Janis Joplin’s back-to-school campaign. On Early Performances album, Janis Joplin have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
This song may be the most meaningful. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Don’t judge Mississippi River on the first listening. A unique and uplifting song. Listening to No Reason For Livin you can hear that Janis Joplin has still amazing chemistry with band members. In Black Mountain Blues it becomes nowhere more obvious that Janis Joplin has yet to define own style. Walk Right In is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. River Jordan is the song that really did it for me. It’s such an underrated song. This track is just a stunning masterpiece. Daddy Daddy Daddy is the first taste of the new album. See See Rider (2:08) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. The sound in San Francisco Bay Blues is really warm and Janis Joplin’s signature voice is still very much present. Winin Boy is a striking and quite long song. Careless Love is a great opener for Early Performances. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor.
