On The Lovesong Album album, Joan Baez have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Lead single “Unquiet Grave” and “So We’ll Go No More A-Roving” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Ivan Grach has compared writing for Joan Baez’s new album to that on ‘The Lovesong Album’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
I like to sing along with So We’ll Go No More A-Roving, though I mess up the lyrics sometimes. Within the first few notes of Once I Knew a Pretty Girl it’s perfectly clear that Joan Baez is living this song. It’s a great pleasure to listen to Death of Queen Jane from the beginning to the end. All in Green Went My Love Riding is just simply stunning. Album opener River in the Pines is a bright, upbeat ditty. Turquoise is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. Danger Waters (Hold Me Tight) is simple, dignified and effective, Joan Baez refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Joan Baez allows each song to breathe and flourish. Once I Had a Sweetheart is a exquisite, simple song by Joan Baez at the top of his game. Nice and different song. Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands gives good insight into the truths. Wild Mountain Thyme is nothing but pure genius. Lass From the Low Country great lyrics, dark, deep, angry and cool.Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word is probably the most interesting track on The Lovesong Album. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think Sweet Sir Galahad is my favorite song on The Lovesong Album. Come All Ye Fair and Tender Maidens is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through The Lovesong Album. Love Minus Zero/No Limit is outstanding work of Joan Baez.
