Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of John Coltrane and Archie Shepp on ‘Spoken introduction to John Coltrane’s set by Father Norman O’Connor’. New Thing at Newport carries a very emotional theme throughout the album. Since John Coltrane and Archie Shepp last CD (New Thing at Newport) on EMI Records back in 1965, I have felt a massive void in my life. This is my first John Coltrane and Archie Shepp Album and i must say i am blown away.
One Down, One Up is almost impossible to review. This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing. I came to like Spoken introduction to Archie Shepp’s set by Billy Taylor. Gingerbread, Gingerbread Boy is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. I love the melodic melody of Call Me by My Rightful Name and to this day it makes me feel good. Scag (3:26) - awsome. Rufus (Swung His Face at Last to the Wind, Then His Neck Snapped) - Okay, I just talked about depth. This track is full of harmonies and gets New Thing at Newport off to a relaxing start.
