ten years ago, Leonard Cohen briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Chelsea Hotel N.2″. It has been ten years Leonard Cohen’ last studio CD, “New Skin For The Old Ceremony” which won Array Academy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. Self-described as Folk: Folk-Rock with lots of words, Leonard Cohen comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. Oh yes, this album gets Array out of Array
Chelsea Hotel N.2 is a marvelous sing-along. Lover Lover Lover gets you up and jumping. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. Why Don’t You Try make listening to Leonard Cohen like being in some sort of time warp. There Is A War as a highlight of New Skin For The Old Ceremony contains a ton of excellent melodies. I like the idea behind A Singer Must Die. I Tried To Leave You is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. Best song on the album, love it. Take This Longing is simple, dignified and effective, Leonard Cohen refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Vocal harmonies in this track are great and song structure is just right.
