While no new Lightnin’ Hopkins album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1964 tour in Australia. Since completing 1964’s ‘See About My Brother John Henry’, Lightnin’ Hopkins fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Hopkins Brother-Sam, Joel and John Henry is an amazing album, racked with beauty.Lightnin’ Hopkins “Hopkins Brother-Sam, Joel and John Henry” is an amazing album.
Hot Blooded Woman is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. This song is dynamic and dramatic. I Want To Go Fishing one is one of the better boring ones. Doin’ Little Heiffer is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track Lightnin’ Hopkins ever produced. All of songs on Hopkins Brother-Sam, Joel and John Henry and have something to say letting alone Hey, Baby, Hey. Hopkins Brother-Sam, Joel and John Henry couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Saddle Up My Grey Mare. Tell Me, Tell Me is one of these floating songs. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. When listening to I Got A Brother In Waxahachie, it gives me such an energy rush it’s unbelievable. The first time I listened to Matchbox Blues I was struck by its cool sound. The song feels complete. The opening track Come Down To My House is very much like you would expect from other albums. Grosebeck Blues stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty. The Dice Game have really caught my ear and imagination. I Walked From Dallas is a striking and quite long song. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Hopkins Brother-Sam, Joel and John Henry.
