Louis Armstrong’s debut, ‘Plays W.C. Handy’, does not fit easily into one genre. This is one of the best Cd’s Louis Armstrong has dropped to date. three years ago, Louis Armstrong briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Yellow Dog Blues”. Louis Armstrong is one of my favourite bands of all time.
Yellow Dog Blues make listening to Louis Armstrong like being in some sort of time warp. It’s such an underrated song. Aunt Hagar’s Blues very upbeat. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Plays W.C. Handy. Lyrics of Long Gone (From The Bowlin’ Green) are precise and evocative. The Memphis Blues (Or Mister Crump) is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. Beale Street Blues is one of my favorite songs by Louis Armstrong. Ole Miss Blues is another strong production from Louis Armstrong. Louis Armstrong is one of artists that allow his songs like Chantez Les Bas (Sing ‘Em Low) to stand on their own and be heard. Hesitating Blues is another favourite of mine. Atlanta Blues (Make Me One Pallet On Your Floor) - Okay, I just talked about depth.
