On Grand Slam album, Magic Slim have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Since completing 1982’s ‘Early Every Morning’, Magic Slim fulfilled their contract with EMI Records and where under no obligation to release another album. John Digester has compared writing for Magic Slim’s new album to that on ‘Grand Slam’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. Unappreciated gift to Blues
She Belongs To Me is possibly the best song Magic Slim has come up. Just To Be With You rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. Walking The Dog is maybe the best thing the group’s ever done. Still going through Grand Slam and coming to appreciate Slammin’ more and more with every listen. Rough Dried Woman is the albums biggest surprise. Fannie May is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Magic Slim released so far. Give Me Back My Wig is a medium tempo tune. Scuffling (3:04) - Oh, this is one of my favorites! Make My Dreams Come True is almost impossible to review. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Wonder Why pretty much defines how I feel spiritually. If You Need Me - To me, this is the best song on the Grand Slam. Teardrop is a song that will not reduce you to tears but leave you thinking long after Grand Slam have ended.
