Since Mike Oldfield last CD (Live In Viareggio Italy 09-08-84 Cd2) on Capitol Records back in 1984, I have felt a massive void in my life. There is so much to love about Mike Oldfield, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Lead single “Five Miles Out” and “To France” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. This album is in perfect progression from Mike Oldfield!
To France is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. Poison Arrows the elegant and beautiful song on the album is hard to describe. I’ve found myself listening to Crystal Gazing back to back and back many times. Such hits like Tricks Of The Light will leave you hooked. Discovery stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty. Talk About Your Life is another strong production from Mike Oldfield. Saved By A Bell is another favourite of mine. Moonlight Shadow is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Mike Oldfield released so far. I believe Taurus 3 is one of the most astounding, heartfelt songs ever written. Shadow On The Wall - I used to hate this song, but now it’s one of my favorites.
