Self-described as Celtic with lots of words, The Chieftains comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of The Chieftains energies, virtually a rebirth. The Chieftains was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from The Chieftains and The Chieftains 7 together. Lots of variety between tracks. My favorite is Dochas
Dochas is kind of track that compels you to skip back and drink it in one more time before moving on through The Chieftains 7. Hedigan’s Fancy is simple, dignified and effective, The Chieftains refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. John O’Connor And The Ode To Whiskey is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations. The Chieftains is hitting on all cylinders in Friel’s Kitchen. No. 6 The Coombe is one of the coolest songs The Chieftains has ever recorded. O’Sullivans March has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. The Ace And Deuce Of Pipering as a highlight of The Chieftains 7 contains a ton of amazing melodies. The Fairies’ Lamentation & Dance is one of these floating songs. Oh! The Brecches Full Of Stitches the elegant and beautiful song on the album is hard to describe.
